Riksbank sets 1 July 2027 deadline to redeem long-invalid Swedish banknotes

Sweden's central bank has fixed a final date for redeeming banknotes that have been invalid for more than a decade. The notice matters to anyone holding pre-changeover Swedish currency, and sets out the application window, the 300-kronor fee and the documentation each applicant must supply. It is short, operational and time-limited.

  • From 1 July 2027 the Riksbank will no longer redeem banknotes that have been invalid for more than ten years.
  • Applications for redemption must reach the Riksbank by 30 June 2027 at the latest.
  • Redemption costs 300 kronor where an application is approved, and each case is assessed individually.
  • Applicants must attach supporting documentation showing where the money comes from, such as bank statements.
  • The Riksbank estimates approximately SEK 3.9 billion in invalid banknotes remains unredeemed.
