Banks urged to treat business succession as a marketing growth lever

This piece from ABA Banking Journal argues that banks should use internal data to identify business clients nearing ownership transition and build targeted marketing campaigns around succession, rather than treating it purely as relationship risk. It sets out criteria for identifying exposure, engagement tactics and metrics for measuring success.

  • More than 2.3 million Baby Boomer-owned businesses are expected to transition ownership over the next decade, according to the article.
  • The author proposes three screening criteria for banks: owner age 55 or older, industry transferability difficulty, and likelihood of a financing need.
  • Recommended outreach channels include email campaigns, treasury platform messaging, industry-specific landing pages, guides, webinars and events.
  • For prospecting beyond existing customers, the article suggests LinkedIn campaigns targeting owners and senior decision-makers plus paid search capturing succession-related research.
  • Suggested success metrics include meetings generated with business owners, transition-related financing inquiries, acquisition loans booked, deposits retained, wealth management introductions and net-new commercial relationships.

FCC narrows TCPA 'revoke all' rule, easing bank fraud and alert messaging

The FCC has set a Nov. 25, 2026 effective date for two changes to its Telephone Consumer Protection Act rules that bear directly on how banks contact customers by phone and text. The revisions narrow the 2024 'revoke all' interpretation and loosen a 2015 condition limiting fraud and security alerts to customer-provided numbers. This item covers what changes, the conditions attached and what compliance teams should adjust.

  • The revised 'revoke all' rule and 'provided number' condition take effect Nov. 25, 2026, based on publication in the Federal Register.
  • Callers may now interpret a revocation as applying only to the message category it targeted, but must give notice of how revocation will be construed and may designate an exclusive means of revocation.
  • The 'provided number' condition is loosened so exempted fraud and security alerts can go to numbers obtained from a 'reliable source,' including a spouse or authorized family member, the customer calling the bank, or records from another financial institution.
  • The FCC voted 3-0 last month to adopt the revisions, which the ABA, the National Consumer Law Center and ACA International jointly proposed in June.

JD Power survey finds bank servicers beat mortgage-only sites on satisfaction

A JD Power survey compares digital customer experience scores for bank-affiliated loan servicers against mortgage-focused servicers, highlighting the role of app and website design in customer retention. Relevant for mortgage servicing and digital banking teams benchmarking channel performance.

  • Bank servicer apps averaged 736 out of 1,000 in satisfaction, compared with 680 for mortgage-focused servicer apps.
  • Bank servicer websites scored 740 versus 704 for mortgage-focused servicer websites.
  • 92% of bank servicer website users and 91% of app users said they would continue using the channel when account management was easy and the layout organized.
  • Those continuation rates fell to 59% and 54%, respectively, when neither condition was met.
  • JD Power's Jon Sundberg said retail banking app and website best practices are translating into the mortgage servicing space.

ABA Guidance Clarifies Business-Purpose Loans Are Not Exempt Across All Lending Rules

ABA's October compliance column answers a recurring examiner question: does a business-purpose loan secured by a home automatically fall outside consumer protection rules? The answer, drawn directly from Regulation Z, X, C and B text and commentary, is no — each regulation must be checked separately, and the same loan can be exempt from some and covered by others.

  • Regulation Z, §1026.3(a)(1), excludes an extension of credit made primarily for a business, commercial, or agricultural purpose, and comment 3(a)-3.ii.A confirms this covers loans secured by a borrower's residence.
  • Regulation X, §1024.5(b)(2), exempts business-purpose loans from RESPA coverage and allows lenders to rely on the Regulation Z determination.
  • Regulation C requires a separate analysis under §1003.3(c)(10): a business-purpose mortgage is excluded from HMDA reporting unless it qualifies as a home improvement loan, home purchase loan, or refinancing.
  • Regulation B, §1002.2(g), defines business credit but contains no general exemption comparable to Regulations Z or X, meaning ECOA generally continues to apply, including the notification requirements in §1002.9(a)(3).
